MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Abdirahman Odowa, the former secretary of Somalia’s ruling party and a longtime ally of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, appeared at an opposition meeting in Mogadishu on Monday, weeks after resigning from his position.
Those attending the meeting discussed two key issues: an invitation by the president for talks on elections scheduled for May 10 and the type of election the opposition wants to be held in the country.
Odowa resigned from his role in recent weeks, accusing the president of veering away from the path of good governance into what he described as armed subjugation of regional states, dismantling the country’s federal system and widespread corruption.
His appearance among opposition ranks follows similar moves by former members of the government, including former intelligence chief Abdullahi Mohamed Ali Sanbalolshe, who has joined the opposition and regularly attends its meetings in Mogadishu, including Monday’s gathering.
Abdullahi Mohamed Nur, another key figure within the ruling inner circle, has also recently announced his resignation.
Many say the developments could herald further defections from the ruling party as a deadlock over elections persists, complicating the situation as the president’s mandate is set to expire on May 15.
