Former winners gear up for comrade’s marathon

The 2019 Comrades Marathon up-run winner, Edward Mothibi, and Tete Dijana, crowned 2025 Comrades Champion in a thrilling finish, have spent the last month of their Comrades preparations in Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, for high-altitude training.

Defending champion Dijana, who’s yet to win an up-run, was candid about his chances and says he does not feel any pressure ahead of the race. The two will be among the favourites for the ultra-marathon on 14 June.

An elite international field will line up for this year’s Ultimate Human Race in just over a week.

With the marathon fast approaching, most would have completed the tough part of their training program for the race.

Former winners Dijana and Mothibi have left no stone unturned to ensure that they are ready for the gruelling 90-kilometre race.

The two, alongside their training partners, Johannes Makgetla and Tumelo Mogomotsi, have been on a month-long training camp in Dullstroom.

While the 41-year-old won the up-run in the 2019 edition, three-time winner Dijana is yet to cross the finish line first in Pietermaritzburg. But he’s confident and doesn’t feel any pressure ahead of the race.

“I’m confident and feel good and will give it the best shot to take honours in the up-run,” says Dijana.

The race features a total prize purse of over eight-point-two million rand following a ten per cent increase across all categories.

The elite winners will pocket R925 000 each.
