AFC/M23 on High Alert as Clashes Escalate in North Kivu

The alliance of rebel groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo says it is on high alert and prepared to respond to any attacks.

The statement comes amid renewed fighting in the eastern parts Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) involving government forces as clashes intensify across parts of North Kivu, with both sides accusing each other of preparing new offensives.

The coalition of Congo River Alliance (AFC) and March 23 insists that it remains on high alert, warning it is ready to respond to any military action targeting areas it claims to control in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a joint statement, the coalition said it had received reports of preparations for new offensives, including troop movements and heavy weapons deployments, particularly in South Kivu.

The AFC-M23 cited areas such as Minembwe, Masisi, Numbi, and Walikale as potential targets for planned operations.

While expressing concern over these developments, the group stated that any attack against areas and territories liberated by the people will receive a strong and proportionate response.

It added that it reserves the right to take “all necessary measures” to push back opposing forces and establish what it described as a security buffer zone intended to protect civilians and property.

There have been ongoing fighting since Sunday, the 31st of May 2026 to this day.

The newly erupted conflicts are between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) which is the national military responsible for defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, supported by the Wazalendo militias, fighting against the AFC/M23 forces in parts of North Kivu, including Walikale, Masisi, Rutshuru, and surrounding areas.

Reports from local media indicate heavy gunfire and shifting control of certain localities, although independent verification remains difficult due to insecurity and limited access to conflict zones.

The escalation highlights persistent volatility in eastern DR Congo, where multiple armed actors continue to operate alongside government forces.

Civilians remain heavily affected by displacement, insecurity, and disruption of local livelihoods.

The Congolese government has consistently maintained its commitment to restoring state authority across all national territory while pursuing broader regional stabilization efforts.

As clashes continue, both sides maintain contrasting narratives on responsibility for the renewed violence, underscoring deep mistrust that continues to undermine ongoing peace initiatives.

Analysts warn that increasingly firm rhetoric from all actors risks further escalation in an already fragile security environment.
