Landlocked countries in sub-Saharan Africa are set to benefit from the expansion of the Beira–Harare pipeline.

The 294 km CPMZ pipeline is boosting its capacity by 67% from 3 million cubic metres to 5 million cubic metres strengthening its supply of refined petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and jet fuel, to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Botswana as well as parts of the DRC, reports Africa Business Communities.

The route forms part of the Beira Corridor, connecting the Indian Ocean port with Zimbabwe and other landlocked Southern African economies.

‘By strengthening the connection between the Port of Beira and the Southern African hinterland, we are reinforcing Mozambique’s role as a strategic gateway for regional trade while deepening our cooperation with Zimbabwe,’ said Mozambique President Daniel Chapo. ‘This is the kind of infrastructure investment that strengthens regional connectivity, supports economic activity and creates greater resilience for the future.’

As part of the project, which is set for completion in 2027, pumping stations are being added at Nhamatanda in Sofala Province and Messica in Manica Province, both in Mozambique.

‘It is an investment not only in pipeline infrastructure, but in regional trade, industrial activity and the long-term reliability of Southern Africa’s fuel supply network,’ said CPMZ chair António Laice.

The pipeline could in future be replaced by a larger diameter pipeline with an annual capacity of 12 million cubic metres to meet demand until 2050. The pipeline could also potentially be expanded to Zambia’s Copperbelt.
