Gayton McKenzie has publicly defended the girlfriend of the late Jayden Adams against threats from trolls who have accused her of contributing to his death.
The Minister of Sport was speaking at the funeral of the Bafana Bafana player, held on Saturday, 25 July, at the Coetzenburg Centre in Stellenbosch.
Earlier this month, the 25-year-old is believed to have taken his life, just weeks after his return with the national team from the FIFA World Cup.
GAYTON MCKENZIE DEFENDS JAYDEN ADAMS’S GIRLFRIEND
Addressing mourners at Jayden Adams’s funeral, Gayton McKenzie called out personal attacks on the player’s partner, Aqueelah Adendorf.
This followed a report that the couple had had a heated argument moments before he reportedly took his own life.
The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture said during his speech: “I want to get the negativity out of the way. I saw many articles blaming Aqueelah for what has happened here today. I want to say to you, Aqueelah, People will talk”.
He added, “I spoke to Jayden, and I know how he felt about you. Let people say what they want to. You loved Jadyn and were there for him. Thank you”.
In a Facebook Live earlier this week, Gayton revealed that Jayden Adams’s girlfriend had been receiving death threats.
He said, “I called her and told her that I will support her. I’m dealing with those threats.
“Couples do argue, you know that. She has lost the father of her child, where’s your sensitivity?”
RETURNING TO SOCIAL MEDIA
Over the past week, Jayden Adams’s girlfriend Aqueelah Adendorf returned to TikTok after briefly deactivating her account.
This followed a report that claimed that Jadyn was “emotionally distressed” after a heated spat with his partner. The publication claimed that the 25-year-old – who is believed to have taken his own life – had called his father to express his apparent sadness and dejection.
The allegations trended on social media, with many trolling Aqueelah over her last interaction with her partner.
Since her return to her TikTok account, Aqueelah has reposted several posts about grief and losing a loved one.
One reads: “’How are you holding up?’ I’m not. I’m surviving”.
