GOBABIS – The National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) is calling on the seven councillors at the Municipality of Gobabis to work together for the development of the town.
Of recent, the Gobabis municipal council has been at loggerheads over the proposed sale of ervens to a private entrepreneur, alleged unauthorised trips taken by the town mayor, Elwin Gariseb, and the selection criteria of the deputy mayor position, among other burning issues.
The council is composed of seven councillors, of which Swapo and A Right to Shelter Foundation each have three, while the Landless People’s Movement occupies one seat.
Nudo’s Uataviza Patire, who served as deputy mayor for the Gobabis Municipality last year, raised his concerns with New Era.
He said the current tone of affairs at the council is opposite to what the community is expecting.
“This is an awkward atmosphere we have never seen before. It is high time the seven councillors of the municipality work together as one and talk in one language as leaders,” he said.
Patire, who became the youngest local authority councillor at the age of 28 to serve in the municipality, urged the councillors to set aside their political differences when serving the community.
“We are there for a common goal, which is to serve the community. It is high time that we should have one voice as leaders of Gobabis. We must bring bright ideas, new changes and better motions that can develop our town instead of fighting one another in chambers,” said the youthful Patire.
He emphasised that the infighting within the council will have a negative impact on the town, and the community will be affected as well.
The former deputy mayor added that the community is expecting a lot from the leaders and not the current push and pull at council’s meetings.
“As community leaders, let us advise our leaders in charge rather than dancing to these current shenanigans. This will not help us at the end of the day, and it will hinder development that has to come to the community,” he said.
Patire noted that the Kanaan C settlement needs upgrades.
He added that the tap water issue is the serious matter to be addressed.
“There are more serious issues to be tackled in our settlements instead of boardroom fights. This must change, and the councillors must be the first people to know their communities’ concerns. Please change your focus to the needs of the people and deliver,” said Patire.
He said unity among councillors will bring development to the Gobabis municipality.
