Alfred Kyaka, the assistant commissioner for Secondary Education at the ministry of Education and Sports, has urged schools to embrace Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) as a key pillar in nurturing well-rounded learners alongside academics.
Kyaka said while officiating at an MDD event at Our Lady of Good Counsel Gayaza, where he noted the importance of co-curricular activities in identifying and developing students’ talents. Long regarded as a co-curricular activity, MDD plays a critical role in uncovering abilities that may not be visible in the classroom.
“MDD is a core activity that every learner should participate in because students are diverse in nature. Education should not only be about mathematics, English or biology. Learners have different skills and abilities that must be nurtured,” Kyaka said.
He also appealed to parents to support their children’s talents, noting that such exposure is essential in preparing learners to compete in an increasingly dynamic world.
The growing emphasis on MDD reflects a broader shift towards holistic learning, where equal importance is attached to academics, creativity and personal development. While some learners excel in conventional subjects, others thrive in the arts, making it important for schools to provide inclusive platforms for all.
Jafar Wegoyi, the head of performing arts at the school, said MDD is also an important tool for mentorship and emotional development, especially among adolescents.
“It is a form of relaxation and mentoring. These are teenagers who are very active, and when you engage them in music and dance, you are guiding them into something positive,” he said.
