Gunmen storm a 66-year-old’s home in Cristo Rey, then flee as police close in

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A home invasion in Cristo Rey Village, Cayo District, was cut short on Thursday thanks to a combination of community vigilance and a quick police response, with one suspect detained and a firearm seized.

According to police, the incident unfolded around 9:30 a.m. on June 4, 2026, when San Ignacio police were alerted that an aggravated burglary was in progress at a residence on the outskirts of Cristo Rey Village.

Officers responded immediately and, on arrival, spotted two men fleeing the home. A pursuit followed, ending with the apprehension of one of the men and the recovery of a .22 pistol, live rounds of ammunition, and an item of jewelry belonging to the homeowner.

ASP Stacy Smith said the homeowner, a 66-year-old woman, had just stepped out of her vehicle when she was accosted by two men who forced her into the house at gunpoint.

The pair then ransacked the residence, packaging up a number of items.

When they heard a vehicle approaching, believed to be the police mobile, they fled, managing to take only the jewelry and leaving behind the rest of what they had gathered.

Police credited the community with helping bring the matter to an arrest.

Smith said it was the neighbourhood’s recognition of strangers in the area that prompted the call to police, allowing officers to intervene in time.
