How Museveni will Be Sworn In for Seventh Term

Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni will on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, be sworn in for a seventh term as President of Uganda, extending his decades-long rule.

The swearing-in ceremony will be presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija at Kololo Independence Grounds.

“I, Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni, swear in the name of the Almighty God that I shall faithfully exercise the functions of the President of the Republic of Uganda,” he is expected to declare during the oath-taking ceremony.

Following the oath, Museveni will be handed instruments of power, including the national flag, coat of arms, national anthem, military emblem, sword, and the official seal. The instruments will be presented by Chief Justice Zeija.

The ceremony will also mark the formal end of the 2021–2026 presidential term, symbolised by the lowering of the Presidential Standard Flag at Kololo. Upon arrival, Museveni is expected to inspect a guard of honour before taking the oath.

At the same event, Electoral Commission chairperson Simon Byabakama will officially declare Museveni the winner of the January presidential election.

Museveni defeated his closest challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform.

He also beat several other contenders, including Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change, Mugisha Gregg Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation, and Elton Joseph Mabirizi of the Conservative Party.

Other candidates in the race included Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party, Munyagwa Mubarak Sserunga of the Common Man’s Party, and Frank Bulira Kabinga of the Revolutionary People’s Party.

According to official results, Museveni garnered 7,946,772 votes, followed by Kyagulanyi with 2,741,238 votes. Nandala Mafabi received 209,039 votes, while Muntu polled 59,276 votes. Kasibante secured 33,444 votes, Mabirizi 32,458 votes, and Sserunga 31,666 votes. Kabinga garnered 45,959 votes.
