By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former UDP Chairman Alberto August has issued his first public statement since being released from police custody following his arrest under Belize’s cyberbullying laws.

August was detained after making a satirical Facebook post aimed at Minister of Police Oscar Mira in relation to public concerns following the murder of Dr. Naum Bonilla. BBN previously reported that Mira had objected to the post, saying the quoted statements attributed to him were fabricated, and that a police report was subsequently filed.

In his post after being released, August described the weekend ordeal as “not a pleasant one” and thanked his partner Reina for “standing strong” and “executing the plan to the letter.”

He also apologized to Reina and her clients, claiming that “a mob of police persons invaded her place of business,” threatening her in the presence of clients and forcing the abrupt closure of her business on a busy Saturday.

August went on to thank his children, family members, former UDP Party Leader Shyne Barrow, Mayor Earl Trapp, UDP councilors, caretakers, Chairman Michael Peyrefitte, attorney Rachel Montejo, and supporters who stood by him while he was detained.

He also thanked station police officers, saying they offered encouraging words even though, according to him, they “simply had to do what they were told to do.”

But August’s strongest comments were aimed at Minister Mira.

He wrote that the ordeal showed that someone “so easily misled” and “so easily triggered by a satirical Facebook post” is “most certainly unfit to command an armed institution that can be politically weaponized against the people.”

“The fella is dangerous. He is unfit and should be removed,” August stated.

August ended his post by saying the experience would not silence him.

“We will not be silenced, of that you can be assured,” he wrote.
