Indlulamithi Survey reveals generational divide over SA’s future

The Indlulamithi Perception Survey has revealed a striking generational divide in how South Africans view the country’s future, with respondents under the age of 30 being more hopeful that South Africa is on a path to renewal than their older counterparts.

The 2026 Barometer found that 72% of current indicators point towards continued economic stagnation.

The findings describe a country that continues to function, but is struggling to create a convincing sense of progress. 

Many respondents fear that South Africa could slide into deeper institutional failure.

This includes the risk of criminal syndicates capturing state institutions, while the economy continues to decline.

However, researchers say there is a more hopeful outlook among younger South Africans.

Those under the age of 30 are more optimistic about the country’s future and believe that South Africa is on a path to renewal. 

Today, the Indlulamithi SA Scenarios Trust hosts Barometer Day.

The research-led launch will assess the country’s trajectory towards three possible futures.
