Season Pamoja: Review of Match Day Three

For the second consecutive matchday, Vipers and Kitara were absent from league action due to their continental engagements. As a result, Kitara’s fixture against URA and Kataka’s clash with Vipers were pushed later dates.

With seven matches played, Match Day Three produced 11 goals only.

Blunt attacks

Match round three produced a subdued attacking return, with three of the seven fixtures ending goalless; Police vs UPDF, Kigezi Home Boyz vs KCCA and Mbarara City against NEC while one settled by a solitary goal. 

The stalemates in Rwamwanja saw Mbarara City end NEC’s perfect start, while KCCA’s wait for a first goal continued after that draw against newly promoted Kigezi Home Boyz.

At Hamz Stadium, Lugazi claimed a narrow 1-0 away victory over Entebbe UPPC, with Cromwell Rwothomio’s strike proving decisive, ending the hosts’ perfect run.

Bul, Blacks Power: Perfect starts intact

Despite Match Day Three’s generally blunt attacking output, BUL and Blacks Power provided the exception, producing seven goals between them.

In Njeru, BUL dismantled Ntugasaze 4–1, with Mpasa Swabir, Simon Achidi, Martin Aprem and substitute Reagan Kalyowa finding the net for the hosts, while Nsamba Fahad scored Ntugasaze’s consolation.

At Wankulukuku, Blacks Power overturned an early deficit to secure a 2–1 away comeback against Maroons. Youngster Ali Ismael put the hosts ahead, but second-half strikes from Andrea Noll Ogwal and Richard Oscar Otim completed the turnaround for the visitors.

The results preserved perfect starts for BUL and Blacks Power, who occupy first and second respectively after three matchdays.

At the other end, Ntugasaze and Vipers remain at the foot of the table, both still without a point. However, Vipers have played two games fewer.

Ntugasaze goalkeeper crisis

Ntugasaze were dealt a major blow before kick-off when goalkeeper Richard Afoyo reportedly suffered an injury during the warm-up for their encounter with BUL. 

According to the team sheet and multiple reports, Afoyo was the visitors’ only travelling recognised goalkeeper, leaving the club with no option but to turn to an outfield player.

Forward Reagan Steven Male was handed the gloves and forced to deputise between the posts. The makeshift goalkeeper ultimately conceded four goals.

The circumstances surrounding the absence of Ntugasaze’s other goalkeepers remain unclear, although injuries could be a factor.

Nevertheless, the situation raises legitimate questions about squad preparedness and goalkeeping depth—particularly this early in the season, when adequate contingency planning should be expected.

SC Villa claim derby bragging rights

The headline fixture of Match Day Three was the Kampala Derby, as arch-rivals SC Villa and Express FC locked horns at Wankulukuku.

Before a respectable crowd, SC Villa emerged 2–0 winners in an evenly contested encounter. 

Patrick Kakande opened the scoring before substitute Andrew Otim sealed the victory in stoppage time, handing the Jogoos all three points.

The result lifted SC Villa to fourth place after three matchdays, while Express dropped to 10th on the table.
