International News: Ship carrying humanitarian aid from Mexico and Belize docks in Cuba

By Zoila Palma:  A ship carrying 1,700 tons of food and other humanitarian supplies collected in Mexico and Belize has arrived in Cuba as the island continues to face severe economic and energy challenges.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said the aid was provided by government officials from both countries, as well as supporters and Cubans living abroad. In a message posted on X, Díaz-Canel expressed gratitude for the assistance, describing it as a supportive gesture during difficult times.

Cuba is currently grappling with severe blackouts and food shortages following a U.S. energy blockade that began in late January and halted oil shipments to the island.

Ongoing U.S. sanctions have also contributed to what officials describe as one of the worst economic crises in the country’s recent history.

Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodríguez said the shipment carried significant meaning for the Cuban people, who continue to endure the effects of the energy blockade, intensified embargo measures, and what he described as military threats from the United States.
