INVEST Vancouver has completed its Invest Talent pilot project, an employer-led workforce development pilot funded by Future Skills Centre, delivering results beyond its training and employer engagement targets.
Designed to respond directly to industry demand, the pilot delivered a scalable workforce development model, training more learners, engaging more employers, and building specialized talent hubs that support sectors critical to the Metro Vancouver region’s economic growth.
The Invest Talent pilot:
- Trained 136 learners in the Metro Vancouver region, exceeding the original target by 113 per cent
- Engaged more than 80 employers in the region, surpassing the initial target by 133 per cent
- Established medical technology and cybersecurity talent hubs
- Identified 87 per cent of learners as part of an equity-deserving group, significantly exceeding the 50 per cent target
“These results show what is possible when workforce development is driven by real employer needs and aligned with economic development priorities,” said Mike Hurley, Chair of the Metro Vancouver Boards, on Monday. “Invest Talent has demonstrated that the region’s leaders can respond quickly and inclusively to talent gaps in sectors that are critical to our regional economy.”
Invest Talent is on track to place 80 learners into production technician roles in the region’s medtech industry, representing an estimated $14.4 million in salary value over the next three years. The pilot project tested and refined an employer-led workforce development model that can be repeated, supporting long-term investment readiness in the Metro Vancouver region. It focused on building coordinated systems that align employers, training providers, and community organizations around employer needs. By aligning training directly with employer demand, Invest Talent reinforces the region as a hub for innovation with the talent pipeline to attract and retain strategic foreign direct investment.
“The pilot reinforces that economic development and workforce development are deeply connected. By investing in people and building systems that respond to industry needs, we are supporting long-term growth and resilience across the region,” said Linda Buchanan, Chair of the Invest Vancouver Management Board.
“One of the strengths of the Invest Talent pilot is that it starts with employers and real hiring needs,” said Jacquie Griffiths, President at Invest Vancouver. “By convening industry and aligning training to what is actually required on the ground, the initiative helped reduce friction between available talent and the roles companies are struggling to fill.”
Invest Vancouver will continue working with employers, industry, post-secondary institutions, and workforce organizations to ensure the region’s talent pipeline can support current and future labour needs and attract foreign direct investment.
