IPID probes fatal police shooting during arrest

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the fatal shooting of a suspected criminal by police in Trichardsdaal, outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect, who was wanted in connection with a domestic violence-related case, allegedly produced a firearm while officers attempted to arrest him on Monday.

Ledwaba says police responded by opening fire after facing what they described as an imminent threat.

He says IPID has taken over the investigation.

Ledwaba says, “The incident was reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, IPID, which attended the scene. A murder docket has been registered, and the circumstances surrounding the incident will form part of the prescribed investigative processes. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, reiterated that police officers have a duty to protect themselves and others when faced with an immediate threat.”
