Yellow heat-health alert issued for London from 17th June to 22nd June 2026

A yellow heat-health alert has been issued for London from 3pm on 17 June 2026 to 8pm on 22 June 2026.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) alert system has three response levels:

  • Yellow (response) – yellow alerts may be issued during periods of heat that would be unlikely to impact most people but could impact those who are particularly vulnerable.
  • Amber (enhanced response) – an amber alert indicates that weather impacts are likely to be felt across the whole health service, with potential for the whole population to be at risk; non-health sectors may also start to observe impacts and a more significant coordinated response may be required.
  • Red (emergency response) – a red alert indicates significant risk to life for even the healthy population.

Health alerts consider things in addition to maximum outdoor air temperatures including how long the hot weather will last, whether it will stay hot at night and whether we will see high humidity as these all contribute to heat stress.

Based on BBC weather forecasts from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 June we are going to have high daytime temperatures and high nighttime temperatures which will feel very uncomfortable for anyone without air conditioning and will stress vulnerable people.

Given that longer range forecasts are not completely reliable it is possible that this warning could be upgraded to Amber or downgraded.

As you may be aware, the Heat-Health Watch system operates annually in England from 1 June to 15 September and is jointly managed by the Met Office and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The system is impact-based and aims to support preparedness and response to periods of hot weather which may affect health and wellbeing.
