Vehicular movement along the Ilaro/Owode Yewa Road in Ogun State was disrupted for several hours on Friday as protesters from Iwoye community barricaded the highway over alleged land grabbing.
The protesters, comprising women, youths and elderly residents, carried leaf branches and blocked the road to express their grievances over what they described as persistent encroachment on community land.
They accused one Mr Ogunleye Edun, popularly known as Orege, alongside others, of allegedly selling parcels and claiming ownership of land belonging to the Iwoye community without the consent of rightful owners.
Some of the protesters who spoek to our correspondent also alleged that certain influential individuals within the community, led by Edun, have laid claim to large acres of land without the knowledge or approval of traditional leaders and chiefs.
“We are protesting because we discovered that land inherited from our forefathers is being taken over by some individuals spearheaded by Ogunleye Edun, popularly known as Orege,” the protesters said.
While reacting to the development, the monarch of the community, the Oniwoye of Iwoye Land, and HRM Oba Buhari Ololade Makinde, confirmed that steps have been taken to address the situation.
He disclosed that a formal petition has been submitted to the Ogun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, seeking urgent intervention.
