Jimmy Rojas remanded after allegedly climbing lamp post and damaging nearly $49,000 in police camera equipment

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jimmy Rojas was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Wednesday after being arraigned on two counts of damage to property involving government-owned surveillance cameras in the Saint Martin de Porres area.

Police allege that cameras and related equipment valued at approximately $49,000 were damaged at the corners of Tibruce Street and Croton Lane, and Flamboyant and Lavender streets, during the early morning hours of August 1.

Investigators said surveillance footage showed a slim-built man climbing the camera posts and repeatedly striking the equipment with an object resembling a knife. Police reportedly identified the man as Rojas.

Rojas appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate and pleaded not guilty to both charges. Although he was offered bail on the new allegations, the court revoked his bail in a separate burglary case after finding that he had allegedly breached his curfew and failed to attend a scheduled court appearance.

He was consequently remanded to prison until September 14, 2026, when both the damage-to-property and burglary cases are scheduled to return to court.

Rojas was previously charged with burglarizing the security booth at Saint Luke Methodist Primary School in March. He had also been charged in connection with the 2024 murder of Jose Matus, also known as “El Whapo,” but that charge was later withdrawn on the instructions of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
