Kitata appointed chair of National Building Review Board

Cabinet has approved the appointment of former Kampala Capital City Authority acting executive director, Eng Andrew Kitata, as chairperson of the National Building Review Board, placing him at the helm of a key institution tasked with enforcing building safety standards in Uganda.

Kitata, a seasoned civil engineer, previously served as director of engineering at KCCA, where he oversaw major infrastructure projects including road construction, drainage systems and urban development works in Kampala. He also briefly served as acting executive director of the authority before returning to his substantive role.

In October 2020, Kitata voluntarily resigned from KCCA after years of service, bringing to a close a career that had positioned him among the key technical figures in the capital’s transformation agenda.

According to a cabinet memo, the appointments were made under the Building Control Act, which is intended to regulate and coordinate building control activities in Uganda.

“Approved the appointment of members of the governing board of the National Building Review Board under the Building Control Act, which is meant to regulate and coordinate building control activities in Uganda,” the memo reads in part.

The National Building Review Board plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with building standards, reviewing structural designs, and guiding policy on construction safety in the country. The board is also mandated to coordinate stakeholders in the construction sector and promote adherence to approved building codes.

As chairperson, Kitata is expected to steer the board in strengthening oversight, particularly at a time when concerns over substandard construction and building collapses continue to emerge in parts of the country.

Other members appointed to the board include Irene Kitara, Arch Henry Kigundu, Irene Achola, Benon Yiga, Eng Chris Opuch, Richard Adrole and Eng Betty Nabbosa.

The new board is expected to enhance enforcement of building regulations and support efforts to ensure safer, more resilient infrastructure across Uganda.
