Leland Robinson: Preserving the Legacy of Hip-Hop’s First Family

Leland Robinson understands legacy not as a title, but as a responsibility. As the son of Joseph and Sylvia Robinson, the visionary founders of Sugar Hill Records, he grew up at the center of a cultural movement that would transform music forever. Hip-hop wasn’t simply part of his upbringing; it was woven into the fabric of his life from the very beginning.

For many, the origins of hip-hop can be traced back to “Rapper’s Delight,” the groundbreaking record that introduced rap music to audiences around the world. Behind that moment stood the Robinson family, whose influence helped shape what would become a global cultural phenomenon.

Even with such a historic foundation, Leland’s path into the family business wasn’t immediate. While he always believed he would eventually carry the torch, he initially pursued a more conventional route, working jobs at UPS and BMW dealerships. Those experiences, he says, taught him discipline, work ethic, and the value of building his own identity outside of the family name.

Still, music remained a constant presence. From traveling with his parents on the road to DJing and experimenting creatively in studios, Leland immersed himself in the industry early on. He recalls producing music connected to the Miami Vice soundtrack and being among the early DJs experimenting with scratching techniques, an innovation that would later become foundational to hip-hop culture.

His education in the music business came directly from two pioneers. “My mother taught me how to make records, and my father taught me the business,” Leland reflects. Their influence shaped not only his understanding of music production, but also the mechanics behind sustaining a successful label and brand.

Before fully returning to Sugar Hill Records, Leland expanded his industry experience at Motown Records as an A&R executive, where he worked with artists including Queen Pen and 3LW. Eventually, he transitioned back into the family enterprise, focusing on publishing, royalties, licensing, and rights management, critical components in preserving and expanding the Sugar Hill legacy.

Today, Leland oversees one of the most influential and widely sampled catalogs in music history. Music from the Sugar Hill archives continues to inspire and appear in works by artists such as Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Wale, and Justin Timberlake. Through strategic licensing partnerships, the catalog has also found new life in campaigns for major brands including Ford, DirectTV, and Nationwide.

While honoring the past, Leland remains focused on evolution. He approaches business carefully, emphasizing calculated decisions and long-term sustainability. His goal is not only to preserve what his parents created, but also to modernize and strengthen it for future generations.

That balance of legacy and forward thinking extends into television and film. In 2017, Leland introduced audiences to his family’s world through the Bravo reality series First Family of Hip Hop, which featured his children and relatives navigating music, business, and family dynamics. He has also been involved in developing The Sylvia Robinson Story, a biographical project dedicated to celebrating his mother’s groundbreaking role in music history.

Leading the family business has transformed Leland beyond the music industry. He credits the experience with sharpening his business instincts, teaching him how to negotiate deals, manage relationships, and think strategically about longevity.

For Leland Robinson, hip-hop royalty is about more than inheritance. It is about stewardship, protecting a cultural legacy while ensuring it continues to grow, adapt, and inspire the next generation. Follow him on Instagram.
