AN independent candidate, Tonderai Elisha Dausi, who is contesting the Chegutu Municipality Ward 1 by-election, has been arrested for allegedly defacing a rival Zanu PF candidate’s campaign posters.
Dausi was nabbed by police details from Pfupajena, Chegutu, Thursday afternoon.
A source who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com claims the 33-year-old opposition aspirant was ordered to switch off his mobile phone upon arrest before being whisked away to an unknown location.
“Dausi was arrested by Pfupajena police, who have taken him into custody but we are currently unsure of his whereabouts. Authorities allege he went about tearing campaign posters for Zanu PF candidate Gift Konjana,” said the source.
The arrest has been described as a calculated move to scuttle Dausi’s campaign trail.
“This is a plot to destabilise Dausi’s electoral campaign in the face of imminent defeat for Konjana, a political turncoat who lacks credibility among voters,” added the source.
Since the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced the Chegutu Municipality Ward 1 by-election to be held on February 21 the political field has been charged amid intense jockeying by the three candidates Dausi, Konjana of Zanu PF and independent candidate Charles Birisawu.
