Mbarara City got some sigh of relief in their fight to fend off the relegation monster after securing a hard-fought 2-1 win over Express on Tuesday at Rwamwanja Stadium.
The Ankole Lions who had gone nine games without a win, eventually bagged all three points, edging the Red Eagles 2-1.
Goals from Clinton Kamugisha and Ian Amanya guided Mbarara City to victory. Express got their consolation goal through Kenneth Kimera.
Mbarara City came into this game in 14th place with 17 points, just a position and two points above the red zone. Therefore, today’s game was important in a bid to ease of the pressure.
Indeed they started the better side and took the lead in the 8th minute with Kamugisha striking home when Amanya teed him up. The lead was short lived, with Kimera finding the equalizer seven minutes later.
However in the second half, Amanya was able to find the decisive goal that arrived in the 56th minute.
Henry Wamala nearly levelled matters again for the visitors but he was unlucky to have his effort hit the woodwork.
The win means Mbarara City remain 14th but move to 20 points, five above the red zone with four games to play.
Express on the other hand stay tenth on the table with 30 points from 26 games.
