Mediation set for ‘Trinibad’ man accused of leaving Golden Bay Hotel with unpaid $11,000 bill

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A mediation session has been scheduled for a Trinidadian national accused of leaving the Golden Bay Hotel without paying a bill of more than $11,000.

Rubindra Rampersad, 46, remains at the Belize Central Prison after being unable to satisfy his bail conditions, which reportedly include providing proof of a residence in Belize and securing a Belizean surety.

Rampersad’s attorney, Darrell Bradley, informed the court that mediation is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, 2026. The criminal matter is expected to return before the Chief Magistrate on August 20.

A successful mediation could lead to a resolution of the dispute and the eventual withdrawal of the criminal charge. However, the outcome will depend on whether an agreement can be reached with the hotel.

Rampersad is charged with making off without payment. He has pleaded not guilty to allegations that he left the Golden Bay Hotel on May 29 without settling an outstanding bill of $11,470.24.

Police allege that Rampersad stayed at the Belize City hotel from May 1 to May 29 after booking a double room with a credit card. The card was reportedly declined several times, while Rampersad allegedly requested extensions to his stay without making payment.

Hotel management allegedly discovered at around 6:00 a.m. on May 29 that Rampersad had left the property. Police subsequently detained him at the Philip Goldson International Airport as he was preparing to leave Belize.

Rampersad was initially denied bail because he was considered a flight risk due to his foreign nationality and lack of ties to Belize. Earlier reports said the court later indicated that bail could be considered once suitable accommodation and other assurances were provided.

He was escorted back to the Belize Central Prison on Tuesday after again being unable to meet the requirements for his release.
