Jamil Mohammed Abubakar, an aviation professional, has been appointed Managing Director of Infrastructure & Logistics at the Dangote Group by his father-in-law, Aliko Dangote, extending a series of family-linked leadership moves across Africa’s largest industrial conglomerate.

  • Jamil Mohammed Abubakar, Aliko Dangote's son-in-law, has been appointed Managing Director of Infrastructure & Logistics at Dangote Group, starting April 2026.
  • His appointment is part of a broader family-led succession strategy, following recent senior roles given to Dangote's daughters.
  • With over 14 years in aviation and governance experience, Abubakar is expected to drive operational improvements and expansion into new infrastructure assets.
  • Dangote's succession approach mirrors a broader African trend of consolidating control by entrusting key roles to family, as the group targets $100 billion in enterprise value by 2030.

The appointment, effective April 20, 2026, puts Abubakar in charge of the group’s ports and trade-enabling infrastructure platform, a core pillar of its Vision 2030 strategy to build pan-African logistics networks.

He will report directly to Dangote and oversee expansion into new port and infrastructure assets across Nigeria and the continent.

“As we pursue our Vision 2030 agenda… Mr Abubakar will lead the Group’s ports and trade-enabling infrastructure platform,” Dangote said in a memo to staff, adding that the company expects his leadership to “unlock new trade corridors that strengthen Dangote’s industrial and export footprint.”

Professionally, Abubakar began his career as a pilot and has over 14 years of experience in commercial aviation, having worked across IRS Airlines, Azman Air, NG Eagle and XE Jets.

He previously served as Chief Pilot at Azman Air and NG Eagle, and is married to Fatima Dangote, the billionaire’s third and youngest daughter and a senior executive within the group.

Their 2018 wedding drew political and business elites, including former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, former President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo, Nigerian billionaire businessman Femi Otedola and Nigeria’s current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He is also the son of former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar, linking two influential Nigerian families.

Family-led succession takes shape

Abubakar’s elevation follows a February reshuffle that placed Dangote’s daughters in key executive roles, reinforcing a broader succession strategy within the group.

Halima Dangote has been appointed Group Executive Director, overseeing the family office and international operations, while Fatima Dangote now leads commercial operations in the group’s oil and gas businesses.

Mariya Dangote is in charge of commercial strategy across the cement and food divisions.

The moves place key divisions under the leadership of family members and come as Aliko Dangote strengthens oversight of a business empire valued at about $33.2 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, while positioning logistics as a driver of its next phase of growth across Africa.

With over 14 years in aviation and governance experience, Abubakar is expected to drive operational improvements and expansion into new infrastructure assets.

Strategic bet on logistics

The group, with interests spanning cement, fertiliser, sugar and refining, is pursuing a target to build a $100 billion enterprise by 2030.

This ambition has driven increased investment in ports, industrial corridors and trade infrastructure to support exports and intra-African commerce, positioning the company to benefit from rising regional trade flows.

Part of the refinery’s distribution is supported by networks linked to Dangote’s half-brother, Sayyu Dantata, whose company operates more than 800 retail outlets, making it a major downstream beneficiary of the $20 billion Petroleum Refinery, one of the largest in the world with a capacity of about 650,000 barrels per day.

Notably, the refining business has gained momentum in recent weeks amid tighter global fuel markets, placing the group at the centre of evolving supply dynamics.

Abubakar’s role is expected to support infrastructure expansion while improving operational performance, capacity utilisation and automation across existing assets.

Dangote said the new executive “brings deep operational leadership experience… with a strong track record in safety, risk management, performance oversight and team leadership.”
