By Zoila Palma:  Minister of State in the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Osmond Martinez, and his delegation are in Taiwan from July 27 to 31, 2026, continuing a series of official engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Belize and Taiwan.

During the visit, the delegation met with Taiwan’s Minister of Environment, Dr. Chi Ming Peng, and ministry representatives to discuss a range of environmental initiatives.

The discussions focused on areas including essential public service systems, the circular economy, environmental justice and approaches to transforming waste into valuable resources. The two sides also explored a proposed bilateral Memorandum of Understanding and an implementation agreement related to carbon credits, an area identified as having potential for further cooperation.

A high-level meeting was also held between Belize and Taiwan, with Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Chen Ming-chi, hosting Minister Martinez and his delegation for lunch.

The officials reaffirmed the longstanding relationship between the two countries and discussed potential collaboration in carbon credits, transportation and electric buses, healthcare, including the construction of two hospitals, environmental governance, education, agriculture and energy, as well as possible financing through Taiwan’s Export-Import Bank.

As part of the visit, Minister Martinez and the delegation also visited the Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation, where officials provided an overview of the institution and Taiwan’s securities market.

Minister Martinez expressed interest in potential assistance and cooperation in digitalization, support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and carbon solution exchange.
