MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to combating Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud through sustained public education, strategic partnerships and investment in advanced digital security systems.
The telecommunications company said it was collaborating with the Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders to curb fraudulent activities and reduce them to the barest minimum.
The MoMo Channel Development Manager for Northern Ghana, Mr David Nana Addai, disclosed this at MTN’s media and stakeholder engagement forum held in Sunyani of the Bono Region last Friday.
The forum brought together journalists, representatives of the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Ghana Highways Authority, the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders.
Speaking during a panel discussion, Mr Addai noted that MTN had intensified its community sensitisation campaign, dubbed: ‘Shine Your Eyes’, to educate the public on the various forms of MoMo fraud and how to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
He mentioned that the company was also deploying advanced digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to strengthen the security and stability of its mobile money platform.
“We are not only reacting to fraud incidents but proactively putting in place measures to detect and prevent them before they occur,” he stated.
Mr Addai further disclosed that MTN was collaborating with transport unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), to facilitate the payment of transport fares through the MoMo platform as part of efforts to promote a cash-lite economy.
He said MTN currently had about 358,000 MoMo agents nationwide and continued to partner with government to encourage the use of digital payments to reduce the circulation of cash and promote financial inclusion.
According to him, the Mobile Money Fintech platform processes transactions worth GH¢8.4 billion annually, which translates into GH¢23 million daily, reflecting the growing adoption of digital financial services across the country.
Delivering the keynote address, the Senior Manager in charge of Customer Experience Planning and Enablement at MTN Ghana, Dr Lawrence Akosen, said the company would invest GH¢1.1 billion over the next three years, including about GH¢380 million this year, to expand network coverage and strengthen network resilience.
He indicated that the investment was aimed at improving service quality to ensure that customers enjoyed reliable connectivity, seamless digital transactions and prompt resolution of service challenges.
Dr Akosen noted that improved connectivity across the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions was enabling farmers, traders, students and entrepreneurs to access opportunities, improve productivity and grow their businesses.
He expressed appreciation to the National Communications Authority, business partners and community stakeholders for their continued collaboration, saying their support had contributed significantly to MTN Ghana’s growth over the past three decades.
