Multi-disciplinary team activated after NW CIT robbery

Police in North West say investigations continue into Friday’s cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in Rustenburg with different police elements assisting in the probe.

A tow truck driver, who was travelling near the scene at the time of the robbery, was reportedly struck by a stray bullet. He managed to drive himself to a nearby medical facility, where he received treatment.

Police Spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh says a multi-disciplinary team comprising of among others, the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, SAPS Air Wing, drone operators and private security partners were activated immediately.

“A cash vehicle was allegedly rammed by a white Audi after approaching the traffic circle. Armed suspects, estimated to be approximately 10 unidentified males, then opened fire on the cash vehicle before using explosives to gain access to the cash compartment. The three security officers on board sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. They were disarmed of their service firearms and escorted away from the vehicle, while the suspects removed an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene in multiple vehicles.”
