Concerns over the health of NEC forward Richard Basangwa began to ease this morning as medical reports indicated he is in stable condition and recovering well following a frightening incident during yesterday’s match.
The injury occurred when Basangwa was struck in the throat by an opponent’s elbow, a high-impact collision that left him struggling for breath and unable to speak clearly.
Witnesses described a tense scene as the player was immediately attended to by medical staff before being rushed to Case Hospital for emergency evaluation.
Upon arrival at the facility, Basangwa was administered a paracetamol infusion to manage acute pain. Doctors prioritised a CT scan to assess the extent of the trauma to his airway and cervical region.
In a major relief for his family, teammates, and fans, the scan results returned negative, officially ruling out serious internal damage, fractures, or life-threatening obstructions.
“He is now able to breathe more comfortably and can speak in a low but clear tone,” NEC FC stated in a briefing. “His condition has improved significantly since the moment of the incident.”
Basangwa remained at Case Hospital overnight for proactive monitoring. While the initial scans provided a positive outlook, the medical team opted for an abundance of caution, scheduling a review with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist for early this morning.
The ENT review will focus on assessing vocal cord functionality, checking for minor soft tissue swelling and confirming the absence of delayed complications.
Should the specialist provide a clean bill of health, Basangwa is expected to be discharged later today to continue his recovery at home.
The team’s management has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the public, reiterating that Basangwa is receiving top-tier medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.
