Nemostars Volleyball Club edged the Nigeria Customs to qualify for the placement final of the 9th to 16th positions and will atleast finish in the top 10.
Nemostars secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Nigeria Customs in the Africa Club Champions at Petit Stade, Kigali, on Friday afternoon.
Having beaten Nigeria Customs 3-0 in the group stages, the coach stretched his rotation and allowed the rockies to get some playing time before the big guns came late to finish the assignment.
Nemostars struggled to receive Nigeria Customs’ strong service thus trailing by four points (13-17) before coach Godfrey Okumu called for a timeout.
Despite Nemostars’ late charge, Nigeria kept their attack alive thus taking home the opening frame 25-21.
In the second quarter, Nemostars started on the front foot after the gaffer brought on Daudi Okello, George Aporu and Bernard Malinga but lacked composure in the final minutes of the game, thus losing the second set 25-21.
In the third frame, Nemostars were proactive, placing the first foot forward. Nigeria Customs switched off where it mattered most thus struggling on reception and having a poor net defence strategy. Nemostars took the set 25-18.
Nemostars levelled matters in the fourth set. Despite losing middle blocker Willington Talemwa to an ankle injury, the Ugandan side held on to take the fourth set 25-20.
It was nerves and pressure in the final set as fans were forced to sit on the edges of their seats. Even though the lead kept swinging, Okello’s hot hand gave Nemo the edge thus bagging a sweet victory.
Next on the menu, Nemostars will lock horns with the winner between Ghana Army and the tournament hosts, APR Volleyball Club.
