The all-Rwandan CAVB Men’s Club Championship quarterfinal between Police Volleyball Club and Kepler Volleyball Club was expected to be a cracker of a game, and so it was.
The match-up served all the thrills of a classic volleyball game. Powerful kills, perfectly timed towering monster blocks, heart-stopping athletic digs and infectious atmosphere from the rhythmic cops coupled with a handful of Kepler faithful who always found the voice with their team in ascendancy.

The opening set was a close contest to start, but Police opened a 5-point lead (17-12). However, Kepler rallied back to create a tense finish with receiver attacker Mohammed Krid, opposite Jair Santiago, Wycklif Dusenge and John Nkurunziza all coming in handy for the university side.
Police dominated the second set with star attacker Elphas Makuto, Matheus Bettim and middle blocker Frank Shyaka unstoppable at the net.
Fred Musoni’s charges had a fast start to the third set, establishing a six-point (16-10) lead, but Kepler crawled their way back into the set, which looked like it was destined to be won by Police, scoring five unanswered points and momentum swing.

As was the case in the third set, Police started the fourth set well, leading by 5 points (15-10), but some poor passing from receiver attacker Bettim coupled with good net defence from Kepler saw them back in the set that was watched with bated breath by the cops. However, Placide Sibomana’s serves troubled Kepler as they couldn’t set up clean attacks, and Police forced a decider.
The game’s decisive fifth set went point for point, but once the teams switched sides, Police opened a 3-point (11-8) lead with Placide Sibomana in the service box and the game was all but done. Shyaka and Melly Kipkirui made a couple of blocks and Gideon Angiro put on the finishing touches.
It will be another all-Rwanda semifinal as Police will face REG. The sides are also facing off in the local league playoff finals, which Police lead 2-0.
