New release: Freddie McGregor – Calling Mr Speaker
NEW RELEASE
Around four years after work first began, Freddie McGregor’s Calling Mr Speaker is finally available through RICK, the newly established label from Rick Howe, presenter of Riddim Yard on PBS 106.7 FM in Melbourne, Australia.
The track is built around a relick of Tristan Palma’s Face The Struggle, originally produced by Linval Thompson in 1982. Naram reconstructed the riddim in Whanganui, Aotearoa, before Freddie McGregor recorded his vocal at Big Ship Studios in Kingston in 2022. Staying true to the feel of classic Jamaican recordings, Naram mixed the project to tape, capturing the character of the Channel One rub-a-dub era.
Besides McGregor’s vocal performance, the 12″ vinyl includes a horns cut by the Hard Rubbish Horns, along with two dub versions created with sound system play firmly in mind.
