Niger’s government announced it has resolved its dispute with Chinese oil companies operating in the country after nearly a year of negotiations, in a move aimed at reviving petroleum investments and boosting production.
Relations between the military-led authorities and Chinese firms had deteriorated after the ruling council led by General Abdourahamane Tiani took power, amid accusations that the companies failed to comply with local laws and demands for unpaid taxes.
During the dispute, several Chinese officials and employees reportedly left the country, while China National Petroleum Corporation was forced to vacate its offices inside the Soluxe hotel complex in the capital, Niamey.
The government announced a series of new agreements, including a one-billion-dollar investment to relaunch two oil projects, with production expected to rise to 145,000 barrels per day by 2029.
The agreements also grant Niger a 45 percent stake in WAPCo, the company responsible for transporting oil through the export pipeline, in addition to increasing the number of jobs allocated to Nigerien workers.
Local media quoted a figure in the oil sector as saying that most of the announced measures were already included in previous contracts but had not been implemented, adding that the new agreement ended months of deadlock between the two sides.
Observers say the deal reflects efforts by Niger’s military authorities to balance the need to preserve foreign investment while strengthening national control over strategic resources at a time of mounting economic and security pressures.
