‘No industrialisation without females in leadership’— Zanu PF Women’s League

ZANU PF Women’s League National Chairperson Mabel Chinomona has said no country can industrialise its economy without putting women in key leadership positions, calling for their greater inclusion in economic decision-making.

Chinomona made the remarks at a party meeting with female senior civil servants in Harare this Saturday held under the theme: “Harnessing the Collective Power of Women”, where she challenged the female gender’s participation in all spheres of the economy.

“Our theme: ‘Harnessing The Collective Power of Women’ signifies unity of purpose and a common desire of women of Zimbabwe achieve their fullest potential in all spheres, be it business or politics or governance or even in personal or social lives,” said Chinomona.

“The goal of this meeting is to sensitise and remind one another of our unique yet interrelated roles in enabling and empowering Zimbabwean women and girls as they go head-to-head and toe-to-toe with men in our predominantly patriarchal world.

“We will continue to emphasise on women empowerment and economic liberation. We believe that no economy can industrialise if its women are not included in the economic matrix.”

Chinomona, who also serves as President of the Senate, said the Women’s League would continue pushing for the elevation of women in elected and appointed positions, and for more women to take up roles in mining, manufacturing, and agriculture value chains.

“As the Women’s League, we shall continue to share opportunities with you, for women to get a strong footing in the economy focusing on mining enterprises, agro-processing, cottage Industries, tourism and heritage-based enterprises,” she said.

Her utterances come as Zimbabwe pursues its National Development Strategy 2 and Vision 2030 targets, which prioritise industrialisation and value addition as drivers of economic growth.

Economists and gender advocates have long argued that closing the gender gap in leadership correlates with better outcomes in governance and enterprise performance. Zimbabwe ranked 93rd out of 146 countries on the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Global Gender Gap Index, with women underrepresented in senior management and technical roles.

The Women’s League has been a key mobilising structure within Zanu PF, with a focus on economic empowerment projects, market access, and skills training for women across the country.

Zanu PF Secretary General, Jacob Mudenda, in a speech read on his behalf by party National Political Commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha, said the appointment of women into key decision-making positions in the judiciary, independent commissions, education and civil sector demonstrates a growing understanding that sustainable development is unattainable without the meaningful participation of women.
