Omusati mother arrested over attempt to drown twin babies

A woman (24) in the Omusati region has been arrested after allegedly trying to drown her twins (9 months) in a pond at Omutundungu village in the Etayi constituency.

Omusati regional commander commissioner Ismael Basson says the incident took place on Saturday at around 16h20 in an open space in the village.

The woman, who is the twins’ biological mother, allegedly threw the babies into the pond and left.

“The babies were rescued by a boy (16) who was busy looking after cattle and witnessed the babies being thrown into the pond,” Basson says.

The police say a case of attempted murder has been opened at Onandjaba Police Station.

Basson says the babies were taken to hospital where they spent the night before being discharged.

They are currently in the care of their father and aunt.

The police say the mother, father and the children are from the same household.

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday.
