*The Wallis Performing Arts Center in Beverly Hills welcomed a crowd of jazz enthusiasts for a 100th birthday tribute to Miles Davis and John Coltrane presented by the Pacific Jazz Orchestra (PJO). Under the capable direction of Grammy Award winner Chris Walden, the 40-piece orchestra ushered the audience into nostalgic bliss as they sailed through the Miles Davis and John Coltrane songbook for “Miles & Trane at 100.” The Pacific Jazz Orchestra is the only orchestra of its kind in the United States.

Sean Jones was featured on trumpet, and he left nothing to the imagination. Jones evoked the spirit of Miles with every note. Jacob Scesney was the perfect brass cohort reliving Coltrane’s audacious riffs and melodious improvisations.

On piano was Emmet Cohen, a commanding force in contemporary jazz, celebrated for his dazzling virtuosity, unmistakable swing, and magnetic presence.

Cohen has released 12 acclaimed albums and is the producer of Live from Emmet’s Place, the groundbreaking livestream series that has redefined jazz broadcasting.

Spanning more than 140 two-hour performances and featuring hundreds of world-class musicians, the series has amassed over 100 million views worldwide.

The Pacific Jazz Orchestra’s “Miles & Trane at 100” also included newly arranged versions of some of Davis and Coltrane’s classic works that helped shape the course of modern jazz.

On the playlist was Milestones, Blue In Green, Moment’s Notice, Seven Steps to Heaven, A Love Supreme and a titillating rendition of Tutu that seeped through the air like an erotic sedative.

In the words of Miles Davis, “Anybody can play. The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the mother#@%! who plays it is 80 percent.” Let’s just say that the Pacific Jazz Orchestra scored 100 with the execution and the attitude to be among the greatest contemporary music ensembles of our time.  The Herb Alpert Foundation (HAF) has funded the 2025-2026 season with additional support from Grow @ Annenberg.
