By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton is criticizing the latest increase in the price of diesel, warning that Belizean families and businesses are being pushed to their limits by rising costs.
In a statement on Saturday morning, Panton said the price of diesel increased again at midnight and questioned what measures the Government intends to introduce to ease the burden.
“When is enough, enough?” Panton asked.
She described the situation as “unbearable,” “unconscionable” and “completely unacceptable.”
Panton argued that higher fuel and energy costs are affecting virtually every part of the economy, including agriculture, tourism, transportation, small businesses and consumers.
She also rejected what she expects will be the Government’s explanation that external inflationary pressures are responsible for higher prices.
According to Panton, Belize’s productive sector is struggling, tourism is flat and entrepreneurs are finding it increasingly difficult to sustain and grow their businesses.
She also highlighted the transportation sector, saying operators are struggling to meet their obligations and maintain reliable services even with exclusive licences.
Meanwhile, she said ordinary Belizeans continue to face a rising cost of living.
“We are still waiting to hear the practical solutions this Government will implement to cushion the impact of rising fuel and energy costs,” Panton said.
She warned that the burden on Belize’s working class and taxpayers is becoming increasingly difficult to bear and ended her statement by urging Belizeans to “stay awake.”
