Human Rights of Women and Girls with Disabilities in Malawi (WAG Disability Rights) has handed over 20 goats to women and girls with disabilities in Dowa District to improve their economic well-being.

Speaking after the donation on Saturday at Chibvala Village, Traditional Authority Mkukula in the district, WAG Disability Rights executive director Stella Nkhonya said they have embarked on a goat pass-on initiative, initially targeting 20 beneficiaries from six villages namely Mntchenenje, Kamkwamba, Nyanthawa, Chatsunda, Chipelepete and Chibvala.

She said: “With support from IM Sweden, we want to empower women and girls with disabilities in Dowa. It is not just all talk as you have seen these 20 women each receiving four female goats and a male goat.

“They will pass on the offspring to the second cohort.”

Nkhonya said the initiative follows a Backyard Garden initiative in Lilongwe which has reached out to 300 women and girls with disabilities.

She said: “Some of the women and girls with disabilities used to beg in the streets of Lilongwe but now they are leading dignified and productive lives since they started growing crops and saving money with village savings and loans groups.

“We believe the goat pass-on initiative will also make a similar impact in Dowa.”

Standard Seven learner Cynthia Moyo, 17, from Chipelepete Village, who was born without hands and writes using her feet, thanked the organisation for the support.

She said the goats will cater for her education and family needs.

Said Moyo: “Many organisations just promise to help us out but they rarely do.

“So, with these goats, I believe they will help towards my education.”

On his part, group village head Mntchenenje urged the beneficiaries to ensure they pass on the offspring to others.
