Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has welcomed the collaborative tone of bilateral talks with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad‑Bissessar following their meeting on Friday in the twin‑island republic.
The discussions took place amid recent tensions between the Trinidad and Tobago leader and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and as Pierre prepares to assume the chairmanship of the regional bloc on July 1.
Pierre has previously said many of the challenges facing CARICOM can be addressed “by just talking to each other”.
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the talks focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries and identifying opportunities for regional progress within CARICOM.
In a post shared on Prime Minister Pierre’s official Facebook page, the meeting was described as reaffirming the strong and enduring relationship between the two sister nations, built on shared history, mutual respect and a common vision for regional development.
The leaders discussed enhanced collaboration in key areas, including energy, trade, tourism, health, culture and information and communications technology.
They also exchanged views on strengthening regional integration and collective resilience in an increasingly complex global environment.
Pierre said the engagement was marked by a strong spirit of cooperation, with both leaders concluding the talks with a shared commitment to deepen bilateral relations for the benefit of their citizens and the wider Caribbean region.
