THE Ghana Chapter of Pilot International has been launched in Accra to promote community-based volunteerism and provide support for underprivileged individuals across the country.
The club, the first Pilot International chapter in Africa, is part of a global charitable organisation dedicated to improving access to education and healthcare, while also supporting families in times of need.
Founded on October 18, 1921, in Macon, Georgia, USA, by Elizabeth Leonard and 40 local businesswomen, the name “Pilot” was inspired by the riverboat pilots of the time, who symbolised leadership and guidance.
Speaking at the launch and charter ceremony in Accra, the President of the Ghana Chapter, Dr Emma Oliveira, said the organisation had over the years committed itself to serving with purpose, leading with integrity, and building a lasting legacy.
“It is a privilege to stand before you tonight as the Charter President of the Pilot International Club of Accra. This event carries deep meaning for all of us here, not only because we have been officially chartered, but also because we have accepted a shared responsibility,” she said.
“A responsibility to serve with intention, to lead with integrity, and to build something that will stand the test of time,” she added.
Dr Oliveira noted that Pilot International brings with it over a century of service built on consistency, structure, and a strong commitment to improving lives, adding that this legacy had now taken root in Ghana.
“As the first active Pilot Club on the African continent, we are aware of the responsibility that comes with this position. We are not here merely to exist. We are here to contribute in a deliberate, organised, and impactful way,” she said.
She emphasised that meaningful impact is built over time through discipline, consistency, and strong standards.
Dr Oliveira said the organisation would focus on supporting vulnerable communities, investing in their welfare, and creating job opportunities for young people.
She pledged that Pilot International would roll out initiatives that deliver measurable results and build sustainable systems that extend beyond its membership.
“To every member of this club, thank you for your commitment, your sacrifice, and your belief in this vision. This has been a shared effort, and your dedication has brought us to this moment,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude to partners and members for their support in establishing the Ghana Chapter, and reaffirmed the club’s commitment to youth development as its core mandate.
As part of its Pencil Power Project, the chapter donated pencils and stationery items to the Dzorwulu Special School to support students’ participation in academic activities.
