By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have issued a Notice of Intended Prosecution to Andy August following a fatal traffic accident that claimed the lives of two men on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
The incident occurred on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway, near the Punta Gorda Junction in the Independence area. Police say responding officers found two motorcycles and three vehicles at the scene, all with signs of damage.
The deceased have been identified as 51-year-old Willie Cruz, a Customs officer reportedly from Corozal/Independence, and 26-year-old Elmer Cal of Red Bank Village. Public reports have also identified August as a 38-year-old Independence resident who was driving a Mazda Tribute.
According to police, the preliminary investigation suggests that August’s Mazda Tribute was first involved in a collision with a motorcycle driven by Cal. Cal was flung from the motorcycle. Police say August then stopped and exited his vehicle to check on Cal.
While August’s vehicle was stationary, Cruz, who was traveling on another motorcycle, reportedly collided into the open door of August’s vehicle. Cruz was also thrown from his motorcycle.
Both Cruz and Cal succumbed to their injuries. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
