A TEAM of Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers on patrol lost a firearm, car and cellphones after being confronted and overpowered by a gang of criminals.
The incident occurred early Friday morning along Northolt Road near Devaris Makaharis School in Mabelreign, Harare.
According to a leaked internal police communication from Officer-In-Charge Mabelreign addressed to Officer-Commanding Suburban, three police officers— Inspector Magidi, Constable Nyamushamba and Constable Chihanga—were on patrol in the Harare neighbourhood when they were attacked by the gang, which went away with the firearm loaded with a magazine with seven rounds, a Nissan Tilda and cellphones.
Circumstances are that on April 10, 2026, and at around 0020 hours, the trio was on patrol and later parked close to Divaris Makaharis School while observing the surroundings.
Cst Nyamushamba was seated at the driver seat, Insp Magidi at the front passenger seat while Cst Nyamushamba was at the back seat armed with a G3 rifle with seven rounds.
“Suddenly three male adults wearing black balaclavas appeared in front of the car armed with a claw bar and a high powered torch,” the police memo reads.
“Insp Magidi then instructed Constable Chihanga to shoot. Constable Chihanga tried to shoot through the open window and the rifle jammed. Immediately the criminals advanced, surrounded the car and hit the windscreen of the vehicle with a claw bar.
“Cst Nyamushamba managed to escape through the driver’s door but was hit on the shoulder with a claw bar.
“Insp Magidi tried to come out of the vehicle and engage them but was struck on the forehead with a brick and fell down.
“Cst Chihanga was being blocked from coming out of the vehicle, he then used the butt of the G3 rifle to hit one of the criminals and managed to come out holding the rifle. However, the other criminal hit him with a claw bar on his head twice and he fell down. The criminals grabbed the G 3 rifle and drove away with the complainants’ vehicle,” the memo further outlines.
The three injured police officers were taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital and their condition is reportedly stable.
The crime scene was attended by detectives, the ZRP special tactics team and the canine unit, who are now hunting for the assailants in a bid to recover the stolen G3 rifle serial number 5567, the white Nissan Tilda vehicle registration number ACS 1584, and two cellphones— a Samsung A15 and a Techno 10.
