By Zoila Palma: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are closely monitoring newly formed Potential Tropical Cyclone One.
The system is moving toward the northwestern Gulf Coast and is expected to bring very heavy rainfall and dangerous flash flooding to parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle.
As of 10:00 a.m. CDT today, the system was located about 65 miles southwest of Corpus Christi, Texas, and about 360 miles southwest of Lake Charles, Louisiana, with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph.
The disturbance is moving northeast at 6 mph and is forecast to move offshore the Texas coast tonight or early Wednesday before tracking roughly parallel to the upper Texas coastline.
Forecasters say the system could strengthen into a tropical storm by early Wednesday before weakening after moving back inland over eastern Texas or southwestern Louisiana late Wednesday or early Thursday.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from Sargent, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana.
Forecasters warn that the greatest threat from the system will be excessive rainfall.
Widespread totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected through Thursday, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 12 inches of rain.
The rainfall could trigger dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding across portions of the U.S. Gulf Coast region as residents are urged to closely monitor forecasts and heed any advisories issued by local authorities.
