Rwanda Energy Group (REG) made light work of Sport-S, with the Ugandan champions’ fairytale at the CAVB Men’s Clubs Championship ending at the Round of 16.

Playing at their first continental tournament and with all home-based players but one, Sport-S offered little resistance in the straight-sets defeat (25-18, 25-17, 25-20).

Malic Damulira’s charges started the game positively, but the gulf in class and experience started to show as REG pulled away and asserted themselves on the game.

“I cannot say we played weak opponents because of the score, but we knew how they would play, where they would set.

“It’s about executing what you planned, and when we executed the services, they were not receiving, the sets were obvious, so it was easy for us, but that doesn’t mean that the team is weak,” REG coach Benon Mugisha said.

Damulira admitted his team was beaten by a better side.

“REG is a very strong team, and it’s noticeable they are so strong in most of the areas and we run victims of such because they have very good service, they are very good offensively and even defense.

“You would see that we were struggling a lot in reception, even the time we would receive it was so hard to score because their defense was solid,” Sport-S coach Malic Damulira admitted.

Sport-S will now play 9-16 classification matches and will face their Ugandan counterparts, Nemostars, who lost to KPA.
