Remembering Ida B. Wells and Assata Shakur

On this day in 1862, Ida B. Wells was born enslaved in Holly Springs, Mississippi.

She became a pioneering journalist, educator, and fearless anti-lynching crusader.

A co-founder of the NAACP, Wells helped shape investigative journalism and fight for Black civil rights. She died in 1931 at the age of 68.

Also born on this day in 1947 was Assata Shakur, a Black Panther and Black Liberation Army activist. Convicted in the 1973 killing of a New Jersey state trooper, she maintained her innocence, escaped prison in 1979, and received asylum in Cuba.

Her autobiography and political writings influenced generations of Black activists, artists, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Shakur remained a symbol of Black liberation.

She passed away in September 2025 in Cuba at the age of 78.
