RNC Midterm Convention Opens in Dallas Amid GOP Divisions

(AURN News) — Republicans opened their first-ever midterm convention Wednesday in Dallas.

President Donald Trump will deliver the keynote address Wednesday night and return Thursday to close out the convention. Vice President JD Vance is also scheduled to speak at the convention.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, will also speak, along with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas.

But signs of division are showing early. Forty-five of the more than 70 Republican candidates and lawmakers surveyed by Politico said they do not plan to attend or were still undecided.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, is not attending the convention. Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Mich., who is running in a competitive reelection race, is also skipping the convention.

His strategist told Politico that attending the convention was never under consideration.

Part of the reason: House members reportedly have to pay $25,000 out of pocket to attend.

One House Republican told Politico the planning was “a mess.”

Trump’s approval rating is at 36% heading into the convention. The question is whether the convention will be a show of strength or a preview of how divided Republicans are heading into November.
