SA Mining Pioneer Prof John Napier Awarded Honorary Doctorate

Professor John Napier’s brilliant mind has led to rock mechanics, mine design and mining safety in the industry. His work has also helped shape the economy for more than four decades.

Pretoria, South Africa (15 May 2026) – For over forty years, Professor John Napier has been behind some of the biggest decisions in SA’s mining industry. This week, the University of Pretoria awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contributions.

Prof Napier is an engineer and a pioneer. Back in the 1980s, when computers were still quite basic, he created software called MINSIM-D, a game-changer that allowed mines to go deeper and stay safer than ever before.

“This enabled the mines to design layouts that made mining possible up to depths of 4000 metres. This was the primary modelling software used for layout design in the gold mining industry for over two decades. His contribution was remarkable, as it greatly assisted the gold mines, a key pillar of the South African economy.” shares Prof Wynand Steyn, Dean of UP’s EBIT Faculty.

He later developed a tool called TEXAN, which helps mines figure out how to place support pillars to keep everything stable and efficient.

“Of particular interest is that the code can solve layouts containing many pillars,” Prof Steyn said. “The code has been widely used in industry to analyse pillar behaviour. In many cases, this led to optimising the pillar sizes, giving higher extraction ratios.”

His technical work is world-class, earning him a spot one of the highest professional honours in the USA’s National Academy of Engineering. His passion for nurturing the next generations in the industry shines, too.

Four of his South African students have won the Rocha Medal!

“This is a worldwide competition to find the best PhD thesis in rock mechanics globally, and annual submissions are received from many prestigious universities. Prof Napier’s students had to compete with top international candidates, and his record of four Rocha medal students is unmatched in any country,” Prof Steyn explained.

Napier has also been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, as well as a Life Fellow of the South African National Institute for Rock Engineering (SANIRE) and a member of the Operations Research Society of South Africa.

“His lifelong interest in rock mechanics is noteworthy, and his legacy is honoured by the Napier Award of the South African National Institute for Rock Engineering, the institute’s highest honour, awarded in recognition of sustained and distinguished contributions to rock engineering,” Prof Steyn said.

In recognition of his achievements, Prof Napier was the first recipient of the award.

“His lifelong contribution is also reflected by the many journal papers he published and the several gold and silver medals he received from the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy,” Prof Steyn said.

This week, UP honoured Prof Napier. Watch the graduation ceremony below.
