ALBERTA RCMP say that the March 14 shooting death of 22-year-old Birinder Singh was not motivated by any type of racial bias.

They announced that a second suspect, Deon Libsekil, 23, who was arrested on March 26, has been charged with second-degree murder and accessory after the fact.

Libsekil was known to police and was already in custody for a different matter.

RCMP had announced on March 24 that Jimmy Gassner, 18, of Lloydminster was arrested in Canoe Lake, Saskatchewan, on March 21 and had been charged with second-degree murder.

Police have alleged that Gassner was a passenger in the truck and fired the shots that killed Birinder Singh. He was already known to police for other charges as a minor.

RCMP Staff-Sgt. John Brown told the media: “It had nothing to do with any type of racial bias. We can say that for sure. We investigated that portion of the file very thoroughly and we came to the conclusion that it absolutely had nothing to do with that.”

Police said that the victims did not have any criminal backgrounds. They are also looking at the possibility of this being a case of mistaken identity and that the victims were in fact random.

Police said the second degree murder charge was because the decision to shoot was made within just a couple of minutes and was not pre-planned.

As reported by The VOICE earlier, Birinder Singh was shot and killed on Saturday, March 14, at approximately 2:50 p.m., while driving with friends on Highway 2 near Township Road 490 near Edmonton.

RCMP said that a white or grey pickup truck was witnessed pulling up besides a black 2012 Honda Civic. Shortly after, the truck sped off while the Honda Civic pulled over to the side of the road. The investigation revealed a weapon was discharged towards the Honda Civic, resulting in the death of the driver.

A grey 2022 Ford F-150 driven by the suspect was later recovered.

Two childhood friends of Birinder Singh told Global News that they were driving to Banff when the shooting occurred. They said a bullet pierced Birinder Singh’s neck and he gestured to them that he had been shot. They managed to take over the wheel and bring the car to a stop and call 911.

They said that Birinder Singh came to Canada three years ago and had moved to Edmonton last October. He was studying business administration and also working.
