MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The speaker of Somalia’s Senate, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, said on Saturday that he will now make his position clear after a prolonged absence from public view amid an ongoing dispute over elections and the impending expiration of the president’s mandate in just a few weeks.
Hashi said he had not been seen in public for a long time due to ill health, but insisted he will now “constantly appear in public meetings” to clarify his stance on the country’s political direction. He also delivered unusually blunt criticism of the governing system, saying Somali authorities and citizens alike fail to abide by the laws they are required to follow.
“A government applies the law, but we are the government – and we do not abide by the law,” he said.
The speaker of the Upper House of the Somali Parliament has not been heard from since tensions escalated earlier this year over elections and controversial constitutional changes driven by the government.
Hashi had previously opposed a term extension for then-President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo during the 2021 election dispute. It remains unclear whether he will take a similar position as the country now moves through another politically sensitive period.
His reappearance comes as Somalia faces renewed uncertainty over its electoral roadmap and governance framework, with competing political forces once again at odds over process and legitimacy.
