Blowing the competition away with their smooth sounds, powerful vocals and impressive musical artistry, The Settlers High School Jazz Band was crowned the BandSlam 2026 Champions – for the fourth time in a row!
Cape Town, South Africa (20 May 2026) – The V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre was an electric buzz last Friday as 15 of the Mother City’s finest high school bands went head-to-head in an epic, high-stakes battle for the BandSlam 2026 crown.
When the musical smoke cleared, it was The Settlers High School standing tall, officially cementing their legendary status in Cape Town’s music history after being named the ultimate winners. This stunning win marks the band’s fourth BandSlam title since the competition’s inception, officially making them the undisputed, most successful school in BandSlam history.
Under the direction of Mr J.Lewis, the band delivered a world-class production that captivated both judges and audience members alike. Their dynamic set showcased remarkable versatility, featuring old-school classics, modern hits, Afrikaans music, instrumental showcases, and even an original composition collaboratively written by Mr Lewis and student musician, Micah Wareley.
The Settlers High School’s Band Director, Jesse Lewis, shared that one of the standout moments of the evening came from Grade 9 learner Jayden Ruiters, the youngest member of the band, whose confident trumpet solo earned thunderous applause from the crowd.

Lead vocalist Matthew Marinus, now in his final year with the band after joining in Grade 9, delivered a powerful performance that reflected years of growth, professionalism, and stage excellence.
Beyond the music itself, the evening was a celebration of teamwork, passion, discipline, and school spirit. Settlers’ supporters filled the venue with unmatched energy, proudly cheering on the band throughout the night.
“Reflecting on the achievement, members of the band described the victory as “an honour” and highlighted how the experience has taught them confidence, resilience, leadership, and the importance of working together towards a common goal.
“The Jazz Band has become one of the school’s flagship cultural programmes, providing young musicians with opportunities to perform on major stages, appear on platforms such as Heart FM and Expresso Morning Show, and develop both musically and personally,” said Lewis.
As the reigning BandSlam champions, The Settlers High School Jazz Band continues to raise the standard for youth music excellence while inspiring the next generation of performers and creatives.
