South African passport holders can currently travel to 101 destinations without needing to apply for a visa before departure, according to the 2026 Henley Passport Index.
That places the “Green Mamba,” as it’s affectionately known, at 48th globally, sitting between Qatar and Belize.
Of those 101 destinations, 53 are fully visa-free, 28 offer visa on arrival, and 20 can be accessed through an eVisa or ETA system.
how the number has shifted this year
South Africa’s access has actually narrowed slightly through 2026.
The country lost visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to five destinations compared to the previous year:
- Mauritania
- Nigeria
- Pakistan
- Kosovo
- Somalia
That brought the total down from 106 to 101.
Despite the drop, South Africa’s overall global ranking held steady at 48th, and it remains the fourth-strongest passport in Africa, behind:
- Seychelles — 25th globally, 156 destinations
- Mauritius — 29th globally, 148 destinations
- Botswana — 59th globally, 87 destinations
- South Africa — 48th globally, 101 destinations
It’s worth noting the index is updated continuously throughout the year as visa policies shift, so these figures can move again before 2027’s rankings are released.

A full Schengen visa is still required for the UK, Ireland and most of the rest of the continent, making Europe by far the toughest region for South African passport holders to access easily.
I’ve always found it worth double-checking these lists before booking anything, visa rules can shift with surprisingly little warning.
As an avid solo traveller myself, visa-free destinations always make my bucket list first.
Knowing this genuinely opens up the world, and makes travel feel a little more accessible, especially when our Green Mamba sometimes feels like the odds are against us.
Still, it’s good to know there are plenty of places we can go without the extra hassle.
